  Erected in the early 4th century, Pompey’s Pillar is one of the largest ancient monoliths outside of Rome. Standing at an impressive 25 metres tall, this red granite column is a powerful symbol of Roman architectural prowess. Despite its name, the association with the Roman general Pompey is a historical misnomer, as it was actually dedicated to Emperor Diocletian.

A Guardian of the Mediterranean
Perched on the edge of the harbour, the Citadel of Qaitbay is a formidable 15th-century fortress commissioned by Sultan Al-Ashraf Qaitbay. Most remarkably, it stands on the exact site of the legendary Pharos Lighthouse—one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. The fortress was constructed using the fallen stones of the ancient lighthouse, weaving the glory of antiquity into its very walls.
​As you explore the stronghold, you will discover impressive military architecture, featuring robust towers and defensive ramparts designed to protect the city from naval invasion.
